The AIU Equivalency - Translating IB, A-Levels & US Diplomas for India
Ishaan
If you are an IB, A-Level, or American High School student in the UAE, Indian universities don't automatically "trust" your foreign grades. You need the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) to translate your UAE results into the Indian "10+2" language.
1. Who needs this?
If you are studying a non-Indian curriculum in the Gulf, you are technically a "Foreign Board" student.
IB Diploma: Required to prove your 24+ points equal a 12th-grade pass.
A-Levels: Required to show that your specific subject combination (e.g., Physics, Math, Chemistry) meets the "Science Stream" requirements in India.
US High School Diploma: Mandatory because the US system (Grades 9-12) differs from India's specific 10+2 split.
2. The "Golden Rules" for 2026 Eligibility
The AIU is strict. If you don't meet these specific curriculum markers, they will not issue the certificate:
Curriculum | AIU Requirement for "12th Grade" Equivalence |
IB Diploma | Min. 24 points and passing 3 Higher Level (HL) + 3 Standard Level (SL) subjects. |
A-Levels | Min. 2 or 3 subjects at 'A' Level + 5 subjects at 'O' Level (including English). |
US Diploma | 12 years of regular schooling + Accreditation from a US regional agency (like NEASC or Advanced). |
In 2026, the AIU has moved almost entirely to a digital portal to speed up processing for NRIs.
Attestation First: Before applying to AIU, your final transcripts must be attested by the UAE Ministry of Education and the Indian Embassy (explained in detail in bullet point # 4).
Portal Registration: Create an account on the AIU Evaluation Portal.
Document Upload: You will need clear PDFs of:
Grade 10 & 12 Marksheets/Diplomas.
Passport copy (Proof of NRI status).
Migration Certificate from your school.
The Fee: For 2026, the processing fee is approximately ₹12,000 to ₹15,000 for foreign qualifications.
Timeline: Expect 15 to 30 working days.
4. The "Science Stream" Trap
Many UAE students take "easier" subjects in Grade 11/12 only to find the AIU won't grant them "Science Equivalence."
Warning: To be eligible for B.Tech (Engineering) in India, the AIU must see Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects on your Grade 12 transcript. If you took "Environmental Systems" instead of "Chemistry" in IB, you might only get a "General" equivalence, making you ineligible for NITs.
5. 2026 Pro-Tip: The "Provisional" Bridge
Most UAE boards (especially IB and A-Levels) release results in July/August, which is too late for many Indian admission deadlines.
The Fix: Ask your school for a Predicted Grade Certificate. Some universities will allow you to take "Provisional Admission" based on this, provided you submit the final AIU certificate by September 30, 2026.
The Final Verdict: Do not wait until you land in India to start this. Use the "quiet months" of April and May 2026 to prepare your documents so you can hit "Submit" on the AIU portal the moment your results are released.
